What is your programmatic work?
Our programmatic work falls into four main categories: research, convening, films & experiences, and pilot projects. Each of these are executed to address topics that we identify and pursue in partnership with specific communities and stakeholders. Please see our Projects page for the most up-to-date list of ongoing activities”.
How can I get involved with Mobility Futures Alliance?
We welcome individuals and organizations that share our passion for advanced transportation thinking and can offer expertise, access to relevant reports or data, or financial support. We are also seeking partnerships and expertise around all the various sectors and disciplines that are affected by mobility issues – urban planning, policy, finance and capital markets, city and state government, etc. The list is expansive! How will transportation create better lives?
A healthy transportation system supports the needs of society equitably and affordably. Rather than divide communities, it reinforces social gathering and cohesion. Rather than segregated solutions, it offers a range of options equally attractive and appealing for all segments of society. And rather than limit access based on geography, it expands access to options and opportunities–jobs, education, and healthy lifestyles.
Who will most benefit from Mobility Futures Alliance efforts?
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Mobility Futures Alliance serves as a neutral facilitator that brings together stakeholders from different sectors who normally don’t collaborate closely. From communities on the ground to government agencies, from corporate players to academic institutions, all voices are represented in our work. Our guided and co-created solutions will serve all sectors of society while also resulting in better economic and environmental outcomes. Equally important, our solutions look at long term visions that will benefit society for generations to come.
How will design and storytelling lead to positive change?
A successful design process balances a broad range of inputs to create solutions that fulfill users’ needs and desires. Successful storytelling captures hearts and minds so that stakeholders and communities can fully grasp how solutions will benefit them in ways that translate directly into their lives. People need to see a better future before they will begin moving towards it. Storytelling is Leadership. Stories Change the world. They always have.
Aren’t the government and private sector already leading these efforts?
Both government and the private sectors are crucial to the success of future transportation systems and are vital partners for Mobility Futures Alliance. On their own, each group is incentivized by different objectives. Government entities ensure stability but are slow to innovate. Private companies move faster but must satisfy financial shareholders. Mobility Futures Alliance will bridge the gap between these–and other–stakeholders to maximize social, economic and environmental benefits and accelerate change.
How can a small, visually focused non-profit lead significant change?
Our MFA team loves transportation, and most of us have spent their entire careers working in the industry. We understand the biggest problems and have a head start in thinking about new solutions. We are also deeply experienced in design and storytelling. We see no other organization that combines these skill sets with a deep desire to create a vision for the future of mobility systems.
Our strength comes from applying our team’s proven creative processes across traditional industry boundaries. Furthermore, because we are a non-profit, we prioritize the needs of real communities and local economies over any particular group of stakeholders or investors.
Lastly, our ability to tell compelling human-centered stories educates the public, aligns stakeholder action, and accelerates change much more effectively than traditional reports and planning documents.
What technologies are you focusing on?
Lastly, our ability to tell compelling human-centered stories educates the public, aligns stakeholder action, and accelerates change much more effectively than traditional reports and planning documents. Technology alone is not the answer!
My car can get me anywhere I need to go. Why should I care about this?
Cars have been the dominant means of transportation in the US for most of the last century and will remain well into the future. But they should not be the only choice available for the majority of Americans.
Our ultimate goal is to offer a range of mobility options based on different trip priorities like time, cost, and urgency. By creating a more diverse mobility ecosystem, all travelers will have a more pleasant journey–whether they travel by foot, bike, car, or other means.
For those of you out there who love cars (and this includes us at Mobility Futures Alliance) we are not coming for your car keys!
